Assign a goal for home practice

Let parents practice a goal at home and log their data, with instructions for the whole goal and for each target.

Applies toBCBAOrg Owner

When you want the family to work on a goal at home, you make the goal assignable to parents and write them instructions. The goal's Active targets then appear in the parent's home practice, where they log each practice. A goal is practiced either at home or in the clinic, never both: once it is assignable to parents, it leaves clinic sessions.

Before you start

  • The plan must be Active, and the learner needs a parent with an account in your clinic to see the goal.
  • You work on the Goals tab of the plan, in the web app. Open Learners, select the learner, open the Treatment Plans tab and select the eye icon on the plan.
  • Org owners assign goals the same way.
Warning
Aides no longer see an assigned goal's targets in sessions or on the printed worksheet, and the plan's main analytics leave it out. The targets' history and progress chart show the parents' data instead. Assign a goal the clinic is still working on only if you mean to move it home.

Assign an existing goal

  1. On the Goals tab, open the goal: in the card view, select the pencil on the goal card or the goal's name; in the table view, open the row menu and select Edit, or select the goal's name.
  2. In Edit Plan Goal, switch on Assignable to Parent. The goal's name and description cannot be changed here.
  3. Write the goal's instructions in Instructions for Parents: what to practice, when and how. Parents see this text. Keep it under 2000 characters; a longer text shows an error when you save.
  4. Select Save Changes.

The message Goal status updated successfully appears and, in the card view, the goal shows a Parent badge. The table view shows no marker.

Assign a new goal

  1. On the Goals tab, select Create Custom Goal.
  2. Pick the Domain and Subdomain, and type the Goal Name.
  3. Switch on Assignable to Parent, write the Instructions for Parents and select Create Goal once.
  4. Add targets to the goal and make each one Active. A new goal has no targets, and parents only see Active targets.

A goal you add from a parent training area of the library is already assignable to parents. See Add goals and targets from the library.

Add instructions for a target

Each target of an assigned goal can have its own instructions, shown to parents next to the goal's.

  1. Select the gear on the target's row (Edit configuration), or open the target's details page and select Edit configuration in the Configuration section.
  2. Fill in Parent Instructions. The field appears only when the goal is assignable to parents.
  3. Select Save Changes.

The target's other settings must also be valid, or the form shows an error and nothing is saved.

What parents see

  • Under Practice at Home in the web app, and in the parent's mobile app, each Active target of the goal with your goal and target instructions. They log each practice from there.
  • Parents see the goal while the plan is Active and the goal is Active or Planned. Targets in any other status do not show.
  • Parents are not notified when you assign a goal. Tell the family it is there.

What happens next

  • The parents' logs appear in the target's history and progress chart, and for you to review.
  • To stop home practice, switch Assignable to Parent off. The targets leave the parent's page, parents can no longer log them, and their earlier logs no longer show in the target's history or chart. The goal returns to clinic sessions.
  • Instructions cannot be cleared: if you empty the box, the old text stays. To change them, type new text.
