Create a custom goal or target

Write your own goal under a library domain, or add a target of any of the seven types to a goal, with its collection settings and mastery criteria.

Applies toBCBAOrg Owner

When the library has nothing that fits the learner, write the goal or target yourself. A custom goal is filed under a library domain and subdomain, but you write its name and description. A custom target can be added to any goal in the plan, whether it came from the library or not, and can use any of the seven collection types, each with its own settings and mastery criteria.

Before you start

  • The plan must be Active. On an On Hold or Completed plan the create buttons are disabled.
  • BCBAs and org owners create goals and targets in the web app. Aides can add targets during a session only when the clinic allows it: see Add a target in session.

Create a custom goal

Open the learner's plan and the Goals tab.

  1. Select Create Custom Goal.
  2. Pick a Domain, then a Subdomain. The subdomain list opens once a domain is chosen.
  3. Type the Goal Name, and optionally a Description and Notes.
  4. To let parents practice the goal at home, turn on Assignable to Parent and write the Instructions for Parents.
  5. Select Create Goal.
The Create Custom Goal window with a domain, a subdomain, a goal name and Assignable to Parent turned on
A custom goal, filed under a library subdomain.

Custom goal created successfully appears. The goal is added at the end of the plan, as Planned and with no targets.

Create a custom target

  1. Open the goal's custom target action:
    • in the card view, select the plus icon on the goal (Create Custom Target);
    • in the table view, open the goal row's menu and select Create Custom Target.
  2. Pick the Target Type: Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Frequency Recording, Rate Recording, Latency Recording, Duration Recording, Generic Target or Task Analysis.
  3. Type the Target Name and, optionally, a Description. When the goal is assignable to parents, Parent Instructions also shows.
  4. Fill in the settings of the type. Fields marked with an asterisk are required.
  5. For every type except Generic Target, decide whether the target changes status on its own when it meets its criteria. Automatic State Transition is on by default. While it is on, pick where the target goes in When mastery criteria are met, transition to: Mastered, Generalization or Maintenance. The choice starts on your clinic's default, Mastered unless your org owner changed it.
  6. To run the target straight away, turn on Start as Active. Otherwise it is added as Planned.
  7. Select Create Target.

The window closes and the target appears under the goal with the Custom badge. The confirmation message reads Treatment plan created successfully, although only the target was created.

What each type asks for

TypeSettings
Discrete Trial Training (DTT)Trials Per Run, Allow Prompts and the Prompt Levels, Mastery Threshold in percent, Consecutive Sessions
Frequency RecordingContext/Activity, Measurement Direction, Mastery Count, Sessions Required
Rate RecordingThe probe length, or untimed, Mastery Rate, Sessions Required, Measurement Direction
Latency RecordingLatency Threshold (seconds), Consecutive Sessions, with a preview of the mastery rule
Duration RecordingTarget Duration, Mastery Duration (no longer than the target duration), Sessions Required
Task AnalysisTask Steps (2 to 30, each with a name), Mastery Criteria, and optionally Track Prompt Levels
Generic TargetNo settings. The aide writes a note, and you change its status by hand.

Every type except Generic Target also has Count different days right after its count. It is off by default. Turn it on to count that many consecutive days, each with every session passing, instead of sessions: see Counting days instead of sessions.

If you switch the type after filling in fields, the values of the old type stay in the form but are not saved.

Good to know

  • Closing either window throws away what you typed, without asking.
  • Select the create button once. A double click can create the goal or target twice.
  • Start as Active on a goal that is already Mastered makes the goal Active again. On a goal you put on hold, the target is put on hold straight away and becomes Active when you resume the goal.

What happens next

  • The new target is Planned, or Active if you turned on Start as Active. Planned targets are not offered in sessions until you activate them.
  • To change the settings later, open the target's details page: see Configure a target's measurement and mastery.
  • The Overview tab updates its progress the next time the plan loads.
