Invite or link a parent

Connect a parent to a learner, either by inviting them by email or by linking a parent who already has an account, and unlink a parent.

Parents follow their child in ABACare through the parent portal: they see the learner, practice the goals you assign for home and log behaviors. A parent sees a learner only once they are linked to them. A new parent gets an email invitation; a parent who already has an account, for example for a sibling, is simply linked. You do both on the learner's page.

Before you start

You work in the web app. Open Learners, select the learner and stay on the Basic Info tab.
The Linked Parents card lists the parents linked to the learner, with their name and email.

Invite a new parent

In the Linked Parents card, select Invite New Parent.
In Invite Parent, fill in the parent's Email, First Name and Last Name. All three are required.
Select Send Invitation.

Warning

Type the email address in lowercase. A parent invited with capital letters in their address can accept the invitation but can never sign in.

The message Parent invited and linked successfully appears and the parent joins the table at once. The window says the parent is linked once they confirm their account, but in fact the link exists right away.

The parent receives an email in English, "You've been invited to join" your clinic on ABACare, with a link to set their password. The link works for 72 hours. See Accept an invitation.

If the email address already belongs to an ABACare account, in any clinic, the window shows an error in English and nothing is created.

Link a parent who already has an account

Open Select a parent to link. It lists the clinic's active parents who are not linked to this learner yet, with their email.
Pick the parent and select Link.

The message Parent linked successfully appears and the parent joins the table. No email is sent: the learner simply appears in the parent's portal. A parent who has not accepted their invitation yet is not in the list.

Unlink a parent

Select the red X on the parent's row (Unlink parent). There is no confirmation: the link is removed at once and the message Parent unlinked successfully appears. The parent keeps their account and any other children linked to them.

What happens next

Once they have accepted their invitation and signed in, a linked parent sees the child in the parent portal on the web and in the mobile app, while the learner is active, and can log home practice and behaviors.
The table does not show whether a parent has accepted their invitation. An invited parent looks the same as an active one.
An invitation that expired or went to a wrong address cannot be resent from here. Your org owner cannot cancel it either, because parents do not appear under Team (see Manage team members). Ask ABACare for help through Help at the bottom of the web app.
Nobody is notified of a link or unlink, and no history is kept.
